Yesterday, I noticed Clarity gazing at her left ear in the mirror. She kept trying to push it up, and get it to press against her head. She was attempting to make it the same shape as her right ear. She saw me watching her and asked, "Why is this ear so flat?" This was the very first time I had ever heard her ask about her ear.
Clarity was born with Atresia and Microsia of her left ear. Essentially, it is malformed and the inner structures don't all function properly. Her left ear canal is also very narrow.
We've actually never called it misshaped or malformed, instead we have coined it her "lucky fin" similar to Nemo's unique fin in the movie, Finding Nemo.
I'm certain that she has noticed its unusual shape before, but she has never said anything about it to us.
After explaining to her why she was born with her "flat" ear, she wanted to know how we could change it to look like everyone else's ears. I told her that when or if she ever wanted to have it changed, we could chat with her (ear) ENT, Dr. Chang and work together to have it match the shape of her right ear. Of course, she needed to know if it involved a hospital stay.
A few moments later, Clarity walked into the kitchen and signed to me while pointing to her left ear, "I was thinking...I like this ear. It's my favorite one."
Whew! Case closed...At least for now...
(PS Her lucky fin is our favorite ear too...)
